Sir Keir Starmer has said he will run against Andy Burnham if he triggers Labour leadership contest.
The prime minister congratulated Burnham on his victory in Makerfield on Friday, but said: "If there is a contest, just to be clear with you, then yes, I will run, I will stand and I’ve said repeatedly I’m not going to walk away from that."
Starmer insisted he was elected to serve his country and that a leadership battle would "plunge the country into chaos".
He is yet to speak to Burnham directly.
