Starmer survives botched coup as Burnham backs him

On Monday, the halls of parliament echoed with the murmurs of rebellion.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s days looked numbered as Labour’s leader in Scotland led the charge against him.

Now the Labour leader in Wales and even Andy Burnham, the slighted King of the North, bent their knee as Starmer told voters that he will “never walk away” from the country that he loves.

He declared that instead of fighting itself, the Labour party should be fighting Reform UK and its politics of division and told his internal critics that the "turmoil" would stop him from focusing his energy on "the millions of people who need us to fight for them".

But was he saved by the lack of an obvious and elegant alternative?

The prime minister is still in office. But not quite back in power.
