Sudan’s military has said it has recaptured the presidential palace in the country’s capital of Khartoum from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) after nearly two years of fighting.
The capture means RSF fighters, led by General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, have been largely pushed out of Khartoum since the war began in April 2023.
The palace, surrounded by key government buildings, is a symbolic stronghold. However, the RSF still controls parts of western Darfur and other regions, meaning the war is far from over.
