Thousands took to the streets of Paris to celebrate the surprise success over a growing surge from the far right. ‘We are immensely relieved’, Mélenchon told a cheering crowd. Prime minister Gabriel Attal, a member of Macron’s centrist party, said he will turn in his resignation.
