87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal who became a symbol for Spain’s housing crisis and sparked nationwide protests after being evicted has died.
She was removed on a stretcher from her apartment of 70 years on September 23. An investment company had bought the apartment and demanded a rent increase, which she could not afford.
She later accepted a deal with the company, and was expected to return home from hospital once she was discharged.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has expressed condolences. Known widely as ‘Maricarmen’, she had become a symbol for renters struggling with Spain’s housing affordability crisis.
