
In Syria, a new currency is being rolled in a bid to restore public confidence in the severely devalued pound and to replace the only notes and coins from the former Assad regime. The change is being seen as a symbolic break from the previous government as it removes Assad-era imagery and symbols. The exchange process begins today, January 1, with one new pound equivalent to the value of 100 old pounds.
