At least 22 people have been killed in clashes in suburbs south of the Syrian capital Damascus – the second day of violence in Druze majority areas around the city. Security forces closed off roads and sent in reinforcements. Israel also said it had struck a group which was preparing to attack the area.

The Druze are Arabs who practice a form of Shia Islam – with followers in Syria, Israel and Lebanon. Israel has offered protection to those living along Syria’s southern border – which many Druze reject.
