Labour rebels have been yet offered another concession on welfare cuts throwing the entire Bill into question.
In an eleventh-hour intervention, confirmed while MPs are still debating the Bill, the government announced that plans to tighten the eligibility criteria for Personal Independence Payments (Pip) have been removed from the Bill.
The move to change eligibility requirements, so that future Pip claimants would need to score four points in at least one assessment category to qualify for Pip, was one of the most controversial aspects of the plans, but also the fundamental cost-saving measure in the package.
Disability Minister Sir Stephen Timms interrupted the debate to tell MPs that the section of the Bill on Pip eligibility had been dropped, and any changes to who qualifies for the disability benefit will now only happen after a key review into the Pip process has concluded.
