Tearful MP speaks to Sky News after suspension by Labour

Rebel Labour MP Rachael Maskell has told Sky News she had to look to her conscience when she decided to vote against the government’s welfare reforms.

She was speaking after being suspended from the party for breaching party discipline. MPs Brian Leishman, Chris Hinchliff and Neil Duncan-Jordan were also stripped of the party whip.

"The evidence was so strong that people were dying as a result of these changes," she told Jon Craig.

"We’ve got to protect people in our society, I believe that. I could not have on my conscience something where we know that people would take their own lives if they had insufficiency."
