Testing period blood samples could be alternative to smear for cervical cancer - study

A new study has suggested that testing menstrual blood for signs of cervical cancer could provide an accurate alternative to smear testing for the disease.

The study in the British Medical Journal suggests that a regular sanitary pad topped with a blood sample strip can pick up HPV which causes most cases of cervical cancer, and could be used by women at home.

At present, most women undergo cervical screening under the care of a medic.
