Kinship carers are often given just 24 hours to decide if they can become the carer of a loved one’s child – but unlike parents who get months to prepare, they are not entitled to no parental.
New statistics show that the lack of parental leave means thousands of kinship carers – those who stand in to care for a family member or friend’s children, when the biological parents are unable to, are being forced to quit their jobs and claim benefits.
Four in 10 are forced to claim benefits or increase their benefits, according to a survey by the care charity Kinship, and 45% of those in work lose their jobs or careers when taking on the care of a child.
