Protests erupted in several Indonesian cities a day after a person was hit and killed by an armored vehicle in the capital, Jakarta. Police fired tear gas and used water cannons against the crowds. Rising unemployment and inflation have driven the student-led protests. Demonstrators are also demanding an end to lawmakers’ privileges, such as housing allowances. Authorities have described the man’s death as an accident. The president of Indonesia is promising to investigate and is calling for calm.
