A newly elected city mayor is reported to be in a life-threatening condition in hospital after being found with multiple stab wounds.
Iris Stalzer is the Social Democratic mayor of Herdecke in the state of North Rhine Westphalia. She was elected to the position days ago. It’s not yet known if the stabbing has a political background. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has condemned what he called a heinous act.
