They are the most modern relationships of the 21st century – subscribers of AI apps developing the most human connections with chatbots.
A number of apps have been developed in the space, but Replika has long been considered a pioneer of the field.
Since 2017, the app has been offering subscribers a safe space to learn how to communicate better and providing emotional support. Recently, outside of America, the UK has become one of its fastest-growing markets.
Psychologists say these apps can help neurodivergent people navigate relationships, but warn they could damage their human connections.
But Counsellor Georgina Sturmer said this kind of relationship with a chatbot is "unprecedented" and there is "a risk that this will become the norm".
