Palestinian Health officials say there are about 18,000 children and adults who need medical care abroad, but their only way out is through the Rafah crossing.
Only 50 people are being allowed to leave each day, and even that figure isn’t being met, leaving thousands across Gaza in a desperate situation.
The Rafah border crossing reopened earlier this month for limited movement of people: those returning to what was left of their homes in Gaza, as well as those leaving Gaza for medical treatment elsewhere.
Since then, Palestinian passage through the crossing has been marred by delays, interrogations and uncertainty over who would be allowed to cross.
Israel has said it and Egypt will vet people for exit and entry through the crossing, which will be supervised by European Union border patrol agents.
The number of travelers is expected to increase over time if the system is successful.
