Thieves stole four pieces of art from a museum in France dedicated to impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, dropping two of the artworks as they fled the site.
The mayor of Cagnes-sur-Mer, located in the south of France, announced the theft on Tuesday morning.
Bryan Masson said two thieves entered the Renoir museum and triggered an alarm at 5.48am, with police arriving five minutes later.
The mayor said the police’s swift arrival “forced the burglars to flee in haste and helped limit the scale of the theft.”
Two of the stolen works were found in the museum garden, but the two others are still missing.
