Shingi Mararike looks at how decades of industrial decline, stigma around mental health and substance abuse have affected the community of Whitehaven and meets the local people trying to break the cycle.
From a former drug addict helping others through recovery, to a man using his own experience of suicide attempts to support people in crisis, we see how one community is fighting back.
At the heart of the response is Hope Haven, one of six pilot centres being established across the country, with the government planning to roll out the model more widely later this year.
