Thousands of people in Hungary have joined a blockade in the capital, Budapest, in the latest demonstration against the government’s ban on Pride marches in the country.
Many Hungarians reacted with anger in March when the government fast-tracked a law which limits the right to assemble in public – seen by many as a direct assault on Pride celebrations this summer.
But the government is standing firm – and plans to amend the constitution in the coming weeks to further cement its position.
It is not the first time the country’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, has been criticised by LGBT+ rights groups. His government passed separate laws in recent years which restricted people’s ability to legally change gender; and prevented same-sex couples from adopting children.
