Thousands participate in Spain’s annual ‘La Tomatina’ food fight

For one hour, every year in the Spanish town of Buñol, both locals and visitors are encouraged to come and throw tomatoes at each other.

It’s called ‘La Tomatina’ and this annual event dates back to a spontaneous food fight between villagers back in 1945.

The event has taken place ever since, aside from a period in the 1950s when it was banned by General Francisco Franco’s dictatorship.

Around 150,000 kilograms of fruit was prepared for this year’s event – but don’t worry, they’re highly ripe and safely squishy.
