Top UN court says Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal

The United Nations’ top court has ruled that Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories are "unlawful" – declaring that its presence should be ended "as rapidly as possible".

The non-binding opinion by the International Court of Justice accused Israel of a "de facto annexation" of the West Bank.

The Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted that the Jewish people were not occupying their own homeland.
