Trump and Zelenskyy hold calmer Oval Office meeting ahead of talks on Ukraine's future | ITV News

President Zelenskyy has met with President Trump at the White House ahead of crunch talks to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.

European leaders, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, President Macron of France and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz are also present.

Trump met Zelenkskyy outside the White House, before joining him in the Oval Office where they took questions from the media.

The meeting was much more cordial than their infamous meeting in February, in which Trump berated Zelenskyy in front of the world’s media.

Trump said there was a “good chance” of the ending the war through these meetings.

“I know the president, I know myself, and I believe Vladimir Putin wants to see it end,” Trump said.

"If everything works out today, we’ll have a trilat," Trump said, referring to possible trilateral talks among Zelenskyy, Putin and Trump. "We’re going to work with Russia, we’re going to work with Ukraine."

Zelenskyy also expressed openness to trilateral talks.

"We are ready for trilateral as the president said," Zelenskyy said. "It’s a good signal about trilateral. I think this is very good."

Earlier today, President Trump ruled out Nato membership for Ukraine just hours before the meeting was set to take place.

The meeting is the next stage of talks following Trump’s landmark peace summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday.

Those joining Starmer include France’s Emmanuel Macron, Germany’s Friedrich Merz, Italy’s Giorgia Meloni and Alexander Stubb, president of Finland.

Nato Chief Mark Rutte and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are also attending.

The Ukrainian president shared footage on social media on Monday of a burning energy facility after it was destroyed by drone strikes, which hit Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, the Sumy region, and Odesa.

Ahead of his meeting with Trump in the White House, Zelenskyy accused Putin of "humiliating diplomatic efforts" following the latest strikes.

"This was a demonstrative and cynical Russian strike. They are aware that a meeting is taking place today in Washington that will address the end of the war," he said on X.

A video shared on X shows Starmer in a plane discussing his reason for meeting with Trump and other European leaders at the White House.

"We’ve got to make sure there is peace, that it is lasting peace, and that it is fair and it is just," Starmer said in the post.
