Donald Trump says the United States has secured “permanent control” over Greenland’s security under a new agreement with Denmark and Greenland. For its part, Denmark says the deal preserves its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.
So, what has Washington gained?
The agreement could significantly expand the US military presence in Greenland, while preventing adversaries from establishing military bases and restricting sensitive investments. The US says its access, basing and overflight rights will be permanent. But Washington already enjoyed extensive military access to Greenland under a defense agreement dating back to 1951.
