On Monday, Venezuela’s far-left leader, Nicolás Maduro, appeared in a New York court — two days after elite U.S. military forces seized him in Caracas. A defiant Maduro told the judge that he had been kidnapped and insisted that he is still the president of Venezuela. It’s important to note that Maduro’s claim to the presidency was widely contested long before his capture.
The events in Caracas demonstrate that President Trump is willing to use U.S. military force to oust a foreign leader on foreign soil. Trump has suggested that this could be the first step in asserting U.S. dominance in the Western Hemisphere. However, this display of military might is also facing criticism from U.S. adversaries and allies alike.
