Italy’s leader Giorgia Meloni is in Washington to hold bilateral talks with US President Donald Trump.
She has been dubbed the ‘Trump whisperer’ and was invited to the president’s inauguration.
Her EU colleagues hope she’ll be able to set up a trade deal with Trump to avoid more tit-for-tat tariffs and to influence his approach to resolving the war between Russia and Ukraine.
ITV News’ Fred Dimbleby talks to Professor Irene Caratelli from the American University of Rome about the significance of the visit and whether the meeting will really pay off for Europe.
