Trump speaks on relationship with Europe as EU leaders rally over Greenland

US President Donald Trump did not appear to back down on his plan to take over Greenland on Tuesday night, telling reporters they will "find out" just how far he is willing to go on the issue.

The president claimed he has "other alternatives" if he is blocked from imposing tariffs on European nations that oppose the US acquiring Greenland, but declined to elaborate.

Earlier, European leaders rallied together against Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, accusing him of "unacceptable threats" against Greenland, and questioning his trustworthiness.

This came as the president has accused the UK of "great stupidity" over its decision to return sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.

The president had, until recently, appeared on board with the deal, which includes a formal transfer of Diego Garcia, home to a key US military base.

His objection to the agreement is the latest development in what has been a rocky passage for Sir Keir Starmer, and now the most recent stumbling block to the government’s agenda.
