Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has welcomed a proposal for Canada to become the European Union’s first associate member, describing closer ties with Europe as a matter of sovereignty and shared values. US President Donald Trump called the idea “laughable” and warned he could impose heavy tariffs on the EU – or even halt trade – if he sees the move as hostile.
