In the latest standoff here between the judiciary and the immigration enforcement service, ICE, Columbia University student Mohsen Mahdawi has been freed from detention on the orders of a US federal judge.

Last summer Columbia was one of a number of university campuses embroiled in protests and encampments over the war in Gaza.
While some institutions like Harvard have resisted White House demands to change their teaching and crack down on dissent – Columbia has complied. And that’s alarmed some academics.
