A trade war is in "no one’s interests", Sir Keir Starmer has said, ruling out retaliatory action on the US as Donald Trump prepares to hit Britain and European allies with fresh tariffs over Greenland.
The prime minister told an emergency Downing Street press briefing on Monday that the dispute with Trump over the Danish territory must be resolved through “calm discussion between allies” instead of pressure through military action and a trade war.
President Trump wants to take over Greenland because of its strategic Arctic location and mineral wealth, and has not ruled out military action to achieve his aim, which is a semi-autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
