Pokrovsk is in the Donetsk region – a key stronghold and logistics hub for the Ukrainians.
After an offensive lasting more than a year, Moscow now has the town almost encircled with 150,000 troops. The Kremlin hopes that capturing the town will let them then take Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.
The Russian advance may be painfully slow, but the pain it inflicts is evident, as Ukraine prepares for another long and gruelling winter.
