The UK is shifting its focus back to military preparedness, with defence spending set to rise to 2.5% of GDP by 2027, while the foreign aid budget faces cuts, Sir Keir Starmer has announced ahead of a meeting with Donald Trump.
The increase from the current 2.3% will result in an additional £13.4bn annually for defence after 2027.
In an unexpected statement in the Commons, the prime minister emphasised the need for stronger defences, acknowledging the threat facing the UK and the weakened state of its armed forces.
Sir Keir’s proposal marks a significant shift in priorities, echoing the UK’s long history of being prepared for war.
