Ukrainian convicts trade prison for frontline in war against Russia

Thousands of Ukrainian convicts have opted to swap their prison cell for the frontline in their country’s war against Russia.

The scheme was introduced last May by the Ukrainian government in an attempt to overcome a manpower shortage – Russia adopted a similar strategy earlier in the war.

Since then, 7,000 criminals have agreed to trade time behind bars for the battlefield.

Deborah Haynes spoke to some of those who have joined in the war effort.
