UK's most senior civil servant Sir Chris Wormald to leave No 10

Cabinet secretary Sir Chris Wormald – the UK’s most senior civil servant – is leaving Downing Street.

The move was decided on "by mutual agreement" between the prime minister and the cabinet secretary and will take effect immediately, according to a statement from the Cabinet Office.

Sir Chris said it has been an "honour and a privilege" to be a civil servant for 35 years and a "particular distinction" to lead the service as cabinet secretary – a role he was appointed to in December 2024.
