The UN secretary general, António Guterres, has said the ‘clear and repeated rejection of the two-state solution at the highest levels of the Israeli government is unacceptable’. The UN chief said the only way to achieve peace in the region is by ending the Israeli occupation in the Palestinian territories. Guterres appealed for more aid access throughout the Gaza Strip as he told the council the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave was ‘appalling’. ‘The entire population of Gaza is enduring destruction at a scale and speed without parallel in recent history,’ he added.
