Unemployment rate highest since 2021

Unemployment has risen to 5.1%, its highest level since January 2021.

Young people are among the hardest hit, with the jobless rate for 18-34-year-olds at 8.7%.

The number of monthly payrolled employees also fell by 38,000.

Many firms say the employer National Insurance rise in April has made hiring more expensive.
