
The American civil rights leader Jesse Jackson – who became one of the country’s most influential Black politicians – has died at the age of 84.

The Rev Jackson set out to build what he called a rainbow coalition with his vision of freedom and racial justice – running for the US presidency twice under the slogan ‘keep hope alive’.
His family described him as a leader of the oppressed, the voiceless and the overlooked around the world – whose "unwavering belief in justice, equality and love uplifted millions".
