US court throws out killer’s sentence due to victim’s AI video shown in court

An appeals court in Arizona has thrown out a 10-year prison sentence for a road rage killer after an AI video of the victim was shown in court last year during sentencing.

Gabriel Paul Horcasitas was found guilty of shooting and killing Christopher Pelkey at a red light in 2021.

An AI-generated video created by Pelkey’s family and addressed to Mr Horcasitas was shown in court during sentencing, in what is believed to be a first for the US.

The sentencing judge at Maricopa County Superior Court praised the video at the time but the appeals court noted that it posed a novel legal issue. #artificialintelligence #AI
