US sends mixed messages over RAF Fairford bomber withdrawal

There have been mixed messages from the United States about the withdrawal of its bombers from RAF Fairford after a suspected terror plot targeting the base.

Downing Street insists the Gloucestershire air base is safe and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he wouldn’t directly tie last week’s arrests to the decision to move the bombers.

But Vice President JD Vance said it was due to an abundance of caution over what Iran might be doing, and US officials told The New York Times that the redeployment had been ordered after more details about threats to the base emerged at the weekend.

This is in line with Iran’s position that military bases used to bomb Iran are legitimate targets.

So, how safe are the bases and does it change what America can do if it re-starts the bombing of Iran?
