The US says it is designating Colombia’s largest drug trafficking gang – Clan del Golfo – as a terrorist organization. The Trump administration has used the same designation to justify controversial military strikes on alleged drug boats in the Caribbean. The decision comes as Clan de Golfo is discussing a possible deal with leftist Colombian government of President Gustavo Petro, who wants to bring six decades of armed conflict in to an end. Talks in Qatar have focused on prison terms for leading Clan members and demobilization of their members.
