Donald Trump has claimed the US would escort vessels through the Strait of Hormuz "if we had to" – after Iran said it would continue to blockade the vital shipping route.
Mr Trump said the US would be "hitting Iran very hard" over the next week.
US Central Command said four American crew members had died after their military refuelling plane went down over western Iraq. Officials said the crash did not involve hostile or friendly fire – but gave no further details.
