The Venezuelan opposition leader and pro-democracy activist Maria Corina Machado has won this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.
The committee hailed her "struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy". And they said it was crucial to recognise "courageous defenders of freedom" who resisted authoritarian rule.
Machado has been living in hiding for the last year because of serious threats to her life.
