Veterans gather to mark 81 years since D-Day landings in Normandy

Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy 81 years ago today, in the biggest land, sea and air operation ever seen.

Nine British veterans aged 99 to 102 will be in Normandy for this year’s anniversary event.

Anniversary timings:
⚪ 0915-1030: Annual Ceremony of Remembrance at British Normandy Memorial.

⚪ 1000: US Military and US veterans hold traditional ceremony at the American Cemetery in Colleville sur Mer. US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth expected to be guest speaker. General Christopher Donahue, Commanding General of US Army Europe and Africa, also expected.

⚪ 1530: Major international ceremony on Utah Beach with representatives from ten nations: Canada, Denmark, Norway, United Kingdom, United States, Poland, Belgium, Netherlands, France, and Germany.

British Defence Secretary John Healey is expected to represent the UK and will be at the Utah Beach ceremony and commemorations at the British Normandy Memorial and Bayeux War Cemetery.

He will also have lunch with British veterans who are travelling to Normandy to mark the anniversary.
