
The Home Secretary said she has lost confidence in the head of West Midlands Police after a “damning” review into the force’s decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from a match in Birmingham.
It comes hours after Chief Constable Craig Guildford admitted the force had used AI to dig up intelligence about a West Ham and Maccabi match – a match that never happened.
Birmingham authorities have faced criticism over their decision to ban supporters of the Israeli football team from attending a Europa League match against Aston Villa on November 6.
Shabana Mahmood told MPs that the policing watchdog’s findings into the force’s controversial intelligence gathering showed “confirmation bias” in the decision to bar the Israeli football team.
