Sir Keir Starmer announced a "full ban" on social media to protect children online vowing to "call time on a system that’s failing our kids". New laws are expected by next spring.
The prime minister has followed Australia’s example by introducing a social media ban for under-16s, including TikTok, Instagram, Threads, Facebook, X, YouTube, Snapchat and Reddit.
It follows promises of "bold action" in response to calls for change from parents, after the vast majority responding to the government consultation backed a minimum age of 16 before children can access social media platforms.
