Reform’s winning streak began after it secured victory early in Runcorn and Helsby by just six votes, overturning a large Labour majority in a blow to Sir Keir Starmer in his first by-election test as prime minister.

Nigel Farage’s insurgents are now in power in a string of councils and mayoralties, after virtually wiping out the Conservative vote.
