On Friday’s ITV News At Ten:
When the Governor of Utah confirmed the capture of a suspect in the Charlie Kirk assassination with the words "We got him" he sounded more relieved than triumphant.
The 22-year-old, called Tyler Robinson, was turned in by his father. He was picked up at the family home, 260 miles south of the university where Mr Kirk was shot dead.
Clues to the motive were engraved on the casings of unused bullets in the rifle found near the scene of the attack. One read "Hey, fascist! Catch!"
President Trump, Mr Kirk’s political soulmate, was first to say someone had been caught. He said he hoped the killer got the death penalty.
The Utah Governor, Spencer Cox, was less confrontational. Asked by Dan whether this was a watershed in American history, Mr Cox agreed. But was it the end of a dark chapter in American history, he wondered, or the beginning of an even darker one?
