Hurricane Melissa has made landfall in Jamaica, becoming the joint second-strongest hurricane in Atlantic history, with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph.
Weather experts warn the Category 5 storm will bring up to a metre of rain, a life-threatening storm surge of up to four metres, and devastating winds across the island.
Also, blasts have been heard in Gaza after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered his army to immediately carry out “powerful strikes”. Netanyahu made the announcement shortly after Israel said that Hamas had opened fire at Israeli forces in southern Gaza.
An AP reporter in the central Gaza city of Deir al-Balah heard tanks firing from an area controlled by the Israeli army. And in Gaza City, two health officials reported strikes, including near the Shifa hospital. Tensions were already high after Hamas returned a set of remains that Israel said belonged to the body of an Israeli hostage recovered earlier in the war.
And Prunella Scales, best known for her role as Sybil in Fawlty Towers, has died at the age of 93, her family has said.
The actress died “peacefully at home in London yesterday”, her sons Samuel and Joseph said.
Her on-screen husband John Cleese has described her as "absolutely perfect".
