President Trump has claimed tonight that the US and Iran have held talks on the "complete and total resolution of hostilities".
He said as a result, the US has paused threatened airstrikes on Iranian power plants.
A 48 hour ultimatum Trump gave to Tehran was due to expire later tonight.
The news was initially welcomed by global stock markets with the price of crude oil falling and shares rebounded.
But Tehran denies there have been any talks, and has accused the US President of using "fake news" to manipulate financial markets.
