A 40-year-old British man is the only survivor of an Air India flight from India to Gatwick which crashed carrying 242 passengers.
Vishwash Kumar Ramesh from Leicester was sat in seat 11A when Flight AI171 got into difficulty moments after taking off at 1.38pm local time from Ahmedabad. His brother Ajay Kumar Ramesh is still unaccounted for.
Pictures from the scene showed thick black smoke rising up into the sky after the plane crashed, with part of the aircraft pictured resting on top of a building. It is understood more than 290 people were killed in the incident.
Local media outlets reported the plane crashed on top of the dining area of a medical college hostel. It was unclear if any medical students were present inside the building at the time of the crash.
