The Government is to set out the concessions it has made to its welfare reforms, in the hope that the climbdown on cuts will be enough to shore up support among their own backbenches, ahead of a crunch vote on Tuesday.
Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall said the Bill aims to deliver a “fairer, more compassionate system” as she prepares MPs for the legislation’s second reading.
The original plans restricted eligibility for the personal independence payment (Pip) and cut the health-related element of universal credit.
The changes to Pip will now only apply to new claims from November 2026 and the government hopes this will be enough to appease some of the near 126 Labour MPs who backed an amendment to scrap the bill.
Plans to cut the health-related element of universal credit have also been scaled back, protecting the amount existing recipients receive.
