Leaders from eight South American countries and a French territory that include parts of the Amazon rainforest meet in Belem on the 8th and 9th of August 2023 – the first time in 13 years.
This summit is an effort to revive the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization and comes at a time when the Amazon, the world’s largest rainforest that is home to numerous Indigenous peoples, is seeing increasing threats from climate change, deforestation and illegal mining.
